Spyros Koulkoudinas sparks backlash over fuel price comments

Greek New Democracy MP Spyros Koulkoudinas has sparked significant political backlash following comments regarding rising fuel prices. During a television interview, Koulkoudinas suggested that those unable to afford 10 euros for gasoline should utilize public transportation. He argued that heavy traffic on Syggrou Avenue serves as an indicator that the Greek economy remains resilient despite increased costs.

Opposition parties, including PASOK and EL ASI, have condemned the remarks as cynical and out of touch with the economic struggles of citizens. PASOK spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas accused the government of blaming citizens for the financial difficulties caused by its own policies. EL ASI compared the MP's stance to the phrase “if they have no bread, let them eat cornflakes,” criticizing the government for treating the cost-of-living crisis with arrogance.

In response to the outcry, Koulkoudinas issued a written statement claiming his words were being deliberately distorted by certain media outlets. He maintained that he was presenting a complete argument regarding economic resilience and government support measures, rather than suggesting the government is withholding aid due to road traffic levels.
