Squamish climber rescue investigated after being stranded on Stawamus Chief
An investigation by Climbing Magazine has reconstructed the events that left a climber stranded approximately 77 meters above the ground at Stawamus Chief in Squamish, Canada. The rescue operation gained international attention due to the use of two drones by local search and rescue teams: one to provide lighting and assessment, and another to deliver a rope to the individual.
Contrary to initial speculation regarding solo climbing or interpersonal conflict, the climber was part of an experienced three-person team that had completed the Alaska Highway route. According to Forrest Rynearson, manager of Squamish Search and Rescue, the incident occurred during a rappel sequence rather than through intentional abandonment or disagreement among the group.
