Square Enix plans updates for Final Fantasy XI trial
Square Enix is planning updates for Final Fantasy XI to simplify entry into the 24-year-old MMO. The company aims to introduce an unlimited free trial period and increase the character level cap from 50 to 75.
These changes are targeted for September 2026, though the company noted the timeline is not yet finalized. While the level cap increase is expected as part of a regular September update, removing the 14-day time limit on trials requires separate technical work on account systems.
Under the proposed expanded trial, players will remain restricted to base game locations without access to expansion zones. Trial accounts will also face limitations, including a cap of three characters and 100,000 gil, with certain social and economic features like trading, the auction house, and world transfers remaining locked.
