Square Enix revamps Dragon Quest 12 as “Beyond Dreams” after development reboot

Square Enix used its 40th‑anniversary livestream to announce that development of Dragon Quest 12 has been restarted. The previously announced version, Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, has been cancelled and replaced by a new project titled Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams. Executive producer Yosuke Saito explained that a team reshuffle and a full reboot caused the delay, and creator Yuji Horii described the new story as following a young hero haunted by strange visions in his sleep, promising a “bright and exciting future” beyond dreams.

The game will retain the series’ classic elements, with character designs by Akira Toriyama and a soundtrack by the late Koichi Sugiyama. No platforms or release window have been confirmed. In the same broadcast Square Enix also revealed Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World for multiple consoles and announced a definitive edition of Dragon Quest XI S for Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for 24 September 2026.
