Square Enix releases Final Fantasy Resonance in HD-2D style
Square Enix has officially launched Final Fantasy Resonance, the first title in the long-running franchise to utilize the HD-2D visual style. This aesthetic combines 2D pixel art characters with three-dimensional environments and modern lighting effects.
The game is available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Xbox app. A free demo is also available across these platforms, with progress transferable to the full version.
While based on the first narrative arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the title has been rebuilt from the ground up as a premium console-quality RPG, removing microtransactions and gacha systems. The story follows a young knight named Rain and his friend Lasswell as they protect legendary crystals from a dark force.
Gameplay features a strategic turn-based combat system where players can use ‘Visions’—echoes of iconic characters like Cloud, Tidus, and the Warrior of Light—to provide unique abilities and cinematic Resonance attacks. The game has received strong critical reception, earning a Metacritic score of 86 on PlayStation 5.
