Square Enix reportedly paused Final Fantasy IX remake development

Reports from industry insiders, including journalist Alex Donaldson, suggest that the development of a Final Fantasy IX remake has been halted at Square Enix. While the project was never officially announced, leaks and previous database findings had long pointed to its existence.

According to these reports, the remake was reportedly in an advanced stage of development and was intended to be a single, standalone title rather than a multi-part trilogy like the Final Fantasy VII remake. The decision to pause the project is attributed to a shift in company strategy, with Square Enix reportedly looking to focus on new intellectual properties and original stories following the conclusion of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy.

Although the project is currently on ice, some sources suggest it has not been definitively cancelled and could potentially be revived in the future, noting that Square Enix has previously revisited stalled projects. Naoki Yoshida has also made comments aimed at managing fan expectations regarding future remakes of older titles in the series.
