Square Enix Restarts Dragon Quest XII, Unveils New Title Beyond Dreams

Square Enix announced that development of the upcoming main‑line role‑playing game Dragon Quest XII has been completely restarted. The original project, titled Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, was abandoned after the team encountered a series of unspecified obstacles. Executive producer Yosuke Saito said the decision to begin anew was necessary to deliver a game that fans will truly love.

During a special Dragon Quest Day broadcast, the company revealed the new subtitle, Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, and showed the first teaser trailer. Designer Yuji Horii described the story as following a young hero troubled by strange visions in his sleep, hinting at a bright and exciting future for the series. No release window or platform details have been provided, and further information is expected in upcoming announcements.

The simultaneous announcement also included news of the next Dragon Quest Monsters title and a Definitive Edition of Dragon Quest XI for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, but the focus remains on the fresh start for the twelfth main‑line entry.
