Naoki Yoshida says Final Fantasy VI remake would require four‑to‑five games

At the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in Berlin on 26 July 2026, Square Enix director Naoki Yoshida (known as Yoshi‑P) explained that remaking classic titles such as Final Fantasy VI, VIII or IX in the style of the Final Fantasy VII remake would likely need to be split into four or five separate installments. He cited the enormous scale of FFVI – 14 playable characters, a world‑changing map and countless battles originally on a Super Nintendo cartridge – and said reproducing that content with modern graphics and detail would be a huge technical and logistical challenge, raising development time and cost. Yoshida acknowledged fans’ desire for new versions but urged consideration of the scope. Co‑director Naoki Hamaguchi added that while his team has worked together for over a decade on the FFVII remake trilogy, no promises have been made about future remakes of these classics. No official announcement of such projects exists, and Square Enix stresses the significant production effort required.
