Squat training: techniques for mobility and strength

Effective squatting requires a combination of proper technique, myofascial mobility, and consistent training volume. To improve movement quality and prevent injury, performing myofascial release exercises before training can help. Trainer Scarlet Canevari suggests that addressing the fascia—the tissue connecting muscles, tendons, and joints—can prevent common compensations such as heel lifting or torso leaning.

Recommended preparatory exercises include using a foam roller on the glutes and hamstrings for 60–90 seconds and using a massage ball on the piriformis and hip rotators.

Regarding training frequency, results in strength and toning depend on individual goals and starting levels rather than a fixed daily number. Scientific evidence suggests that total weekly volume is more critical than daily frequency. For muscle mass and strength, progressive loading with fewer repetitions is preferred, while bodyweight squats with higher repetitions are effective for toning. Consistency and correct form are essential to avoid stress on the knees and back.
