Squid Game ranked 72nd in New York Times best 21st-century dramas

The New York Times has ranked the Netflix series ‘Squid Game’ as the 72nd best drama of the 21st century. The ranking was determined by a survey of 500 industry professionals, including actors, producers, and streaming executives, who each recommended their top ten series released since 2000.

Jeremy Egner, an editor for The New York Times TV section, described the South Korean thriller as a violent critique of capitalism, noting that its message regarding the destruction of humanity through competitive sports is clear. The series, directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, remains one of Netflix’s most popular non-English language productions.

In the same list, the series ‘Beef’ (directed by Lee Seong-jin) was ranked one spot higher at 71st. While discussions regarding a potential American spin-off of ‘Squid Game’ directed by David Fincher had previously circulated, recent reports suggest that Netflix has shifted its focus toward localized versions for different global markets instead.
