Squinzano: 17-year-old girl killed by train in station accident
A 17-year-old girl, Benedetta Daniele, died after being struck by an Intercity train at the Squinzano railway station in Salento, Italy. The incident occurred shortly before 9:00 PM as the train was traveling from Lecce toward Brindisi.
Investigators from the Polfer (Railway Police) have ruled out suicide, reconstructing the event as a tragic accident. It is believed the teenager attempted to cross the tracks to avoid using the station's underpass, possibly to shorten her walk to meet her boyfriend. Reports suggest she may have been wearing headphones, which might have prevented her from hearing the train's warning signals.
The accident caused significant disruptions to rail traffic on the Lecce-Bari line, forcing several Frecciarossa and Intercity services to terminate early in Bari or Brindisi. Emergency services, including the 118 medical team and local Carabinieri, attended the scene, but the impact was fatal.
