Srebrenica school faces backlash over reported ban on national football jerseys

A controversy has emerged in Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, regarding a reported ban on students wearing the national football team's jersey at the Srebrenica Secondary School Center. Parents and local officials claim that after several students arrived in national team attire, the school administration warned them that they could face disciplinary action, including reduced conduct grades, for wearing the jerseys.

School officials, including Director Sanja Močević, have denied the allegations of targeted punishment. The school maintains that the teaching council discussed the Ethical Code, which requires neat attire and prohibits clothing that might offend other ethnic groups or incite intolerance. The school has issued a statement denying that any student's conduct grade was reduced due to clothing.

Political and human rights figures have reacted strongly. Ćamil Duraković, Vice President of Republika Srpska, suggested the incident reflects a broader political effort to negate state symbols and indicated that legal action may follow. Murat Tahirović, President of the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide, condemned the reported actions as unacceptable, stating that Srebrenica should not be a place where children are taught that the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina is unwelcome.
