Srem region undergoes landscape transformation due to urbanization

The Srem region in Serbia is experiencing a significant transformation of its landscape as greenery, orchards, and forests are increasingly replaced by agricultural land, residential housing, industrial halls, and asphalt. This shift is driven by various factors, including land being cleared for farming, the abandonment of old orchards, and the rising value of land for construction.

Observers note that old trees are being removed much faster than new ones can grow, leading to increased heat in urban areas and a loss of habitats for birds and other animals. This environmental change is altering the traditional character of Srem villages and towns, turning once-green landscapes into spaces that resemble the transition zones between fields and construction areas.

In towns like Inđija, the physical appearance of central landmarks, such as Freedom Square, has also evolved. While the architecture and rhythm of city life have changed, local residents maintain strong emotional connections to the historical identity of these spaces.
