Sremska Mitrovica family seeks justice seven years after fatal traffic accident

Marta Mićić has been seeking justice for seven years following the death of her 18-year-old son, Dušan Mićić, who was killed in a traffic accident in Sremska Mitrovica on June 9, 2019. The accident involved a BMW driven by a peer of the victim.

Despite the passage of time, no indictment has been filed against the driver. The Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Sremska Mitrovica previously closed the case, a decision that was upheld by the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office. However, higher judicial instances later identified investigative flaws and ordered additional expert examinations, leading to a mandate for the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office to reopen the investigation.

The case was returned to the local prosecutor's office three months ago and assigned to a new prosecutor. While the family reports cooperative communication with the new official, the mother expressed frustration over the prolonged delay, stating, “I am waiting for justice for seven years!” She expressed concern that the defense may attempt to use time delays to reach the statute of limitations.
