Søren Gade resigns from Danish Parliament over party disagreements

Søren Gade, the former Speaker of the Folketing and long-time Venstre member, has announced his resignation from the Danish Parliament. Gade cited fundamental disagreements with the party's current political direction, specifically regarding its stance on agricultural policies and the new nitrogen law. He stated that he could no longer support the 'new journey' the party leadership has embarked upon.

Gade's departure follows internal friction within Venstre, including a controversial portrait in Jyllands-Posten based on anonymous sources, which he described as a personal attack. His exit has been characterized by political commentators as a significant blow to the leadership of party chairman Troels Lund Poulsen, suggesting that the resignation may not resolve the deep-seated internal divisions within the party.

Erik Flyvholm, former mayor of Lemvig, will take over Gade's mandate in the Folketing. Reactions from former colleagues have been mixed, with some expressing support for Gade's decision while others criticized the party for deviating from its historical foundations.
