Sérgio Brito to be sole 1988 Constitution author in 2027 Congress
Following the recent elections, Federal Deputy Sérgio Brito (PSD-BA) will be the sole member of the Brazilian National Congress in 2027 who participated in the drafting of the 1988 Constitution. This marks the lowest representation of constitutional delegates in the history of the current legislative framework.
In the first legislature following the constitution's promulgation (1991–1995), 277 delegates held seats in Congress. Currently, four delegates serve in the Chamber of Deputies: Sérgio Brito, Lídice da Mata, Benedita da Silva, and Aécio Neves. However, following the election results, Brito is the only one to secure reelection for the term beginning in February 2027. Other delegates either lost their bids or chose not to run.
The shifting composition of Congress has become a political talking point. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has suggested that a more right-leaning Congress could facilitate constitutional amendments, specifically regarding judicial reform, the reduction of the age of criminal responsibility, and the end of reelection. He later clarified that his comments referred to specific Proposed Amendments to the Constitution (PECs).
