Sérgio Macarrão, Brazilian Olympic basketball medalist, dies at 81

Sérgio Toledo Machado, known as Sérgio Macarrão, a former Brazilian national basketball player and Olympic medalist, has died at the age of 81. The Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB) confirmed the news on social media, noting his significant contributions to the sport in Brazil.

Macarrão earned an Olympic bronze medal with the Brazilian men's team at the 1964 Tokyo Games, which remains the last Olympic medal won by the Brazilian men's basketball team. His international career also included a bronze medal at the 1967 World Championship in Uruguay and a silver medal at the 1970 World Championship in Yugoslavia.

At the club level, he was trained by Botafogo and played for several major Rio de Janeiro clubs, including Flamengo, Vasco da Gama, and Fluminense. He also played for São Caetano and concluded his professional career at Mackenzie.
