Várzea Grande restarts sewage treatment plant project after 13-year delay

The municipality of Várzea Grande has formalized a commitment to resume construction on the Santa Maria Sewage Treatment Plant (ETE), a project that has been stalled since 2013. Mayor Flávia Moretti signed the agreement following a technical meeting at the Mato Grosso State Court of Accounts (TCE-MT) to resolve bureaucratic and technical hurdles involving Caixa Econômica Federal and environmental agencies.

The project's resumption aims to prevent the loss of over R$ 100 million in public funds that were at risk of being returned due to non-execution. Once completed, the first stage of the ETE Santa Maria will have the capacity to treat approximately 90 liters of sewage per second, benefiting more than 15,000 residences.

Local authorities expect this infrastructure advancement to increase Várzea Grande’s sewage treatment rate from the current 12% to 62%.
