Sri Lanka achieves upper-middle-income status amid tourism surge
Sri Lanka has achieved significant economic milestones, including being reclassified as an upper-middle-income economy by the World Bank. During the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath stated that the nation has restored macroeconomic stability following the 2022 economic crisis.
Parallel to these fiscal developments, the country has seen a major surge in its tourism sector. According to the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Development Index 2026, Sri Lanka is among the top 10 fastest-improving economies for travel and tourism development. In 2025, international tourist arrivals reached a record 2.36 million, generating approximately US$3.2 billion in earnings.
Despite this progress, challenges remain. The rapid expansion of tourism poses risks to infrastructure, including airports, roads, waste management, and water supplies. Policymakers are cautioned that managing growth responsibly is essential to prevent undermining the country’s natural and heritage attractions. Additionally, the government continues to address the impacts of climate-related disasters and the need to rebuild public trust through economic discipline.
