Sri Lanka Cabinet approves compensation for Negombo prison officers

The Sri Lankan Cabinet of Ministers has approved a special compensation package for prison officers affected by violent clashes at Negombo Prison that occurred on July 5 and 6, 2026. According to Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, the payments are based on recommendations from a committee led by the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and National Integration.

Under the new scheme, families of officers killed in the clashes will receive Rs. 5 million. Officers who suffer total disability will also receive Rs. 5 million. For those with partial disabilities, the compensation is set at Rs. 4 million for a 100% loss of maximum earning capacity, and Rs. 3 million for temporary partial disability. These amounts are provided in addition to existing compensation under Public Administration Circular No. 22/93.

In response to the unrest, the Cabinet also approved amendments to the Prisons Ordinance to create a formal legal framework for the Prisons Tactical Force. Plans include recruiting qualified personnel, providing specialized training, equipping officers with modern tools, and establishing a dedicated headquarters for the force.
