Sri Lanka considers relief for workers facing El Niño job losses

The Sri Lankan government is evaluating a dedicated relief mechanism to support workers facing unemployment due to the economic disruptions caused by El Niño. The climate phenomenon is expected to impact rain-dependent sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, and hydropower-linked industries, which are vital to the nation's employment landscape.

During a meeting of a special Cabinet subcommittee chaired by Environment Minister Dammika Patabendi, officials discussed measures to protect livelihoods and minimize the impact on fruit and vegetable cultivation to prevent domestic shortages. Six districts are currently identified as being affected by El Niño-related conditions.

In addition to employment relief, the committee is reviewing programs to maintain water supplies in affected areas. Further discussions with district secretaries are planned, and a media briefing regarding preparations for the upcoming Maha cultivation season is scheduled for September 4.
