Sri Lanka Customs exceeds July revenue target for seventh month

Sri Lanka Customs reported that it collected 227.6 billion rupees in July, surpassing its monthly target of 192.4 billion rupees ahead of schedule. The early collection puts the agency at 73 % of the year‑long revenue goal of 2,207 billion rupees after just seven months.

The surge reflects a rebound in import volumes, tighter enforcement against under‑invoicing, and improved valuation practices following the 2022 economic crisis. Increased customs duties, excise and other levies are bolstering the Treasury as Sri Lanka works to meet fiscal targets under its IMF‑supported program.

Analysts credit the stronger performance to a more favourable exchange‑rate environment and the gradual relaxation of import controls, which together provide additional fiscal space for the government’s recovery efforts.
