Sri Lanka Customs seizes Rs. 67.5 million in narcotics

Sri Lanka Customs' Narcotics Control Unit (NCU) intercepted a major shipment of illegal narcotics valued at over Rs. 67.53 million at the Central Mail Exchange in Colombo. The drugs were concealed within 11 international postal parcels, including shipments disguised as books, sent from various countries including Thailand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Germany.

The seizure included over 3.1 kilograms of Kush cannabis, valued at more than Rs. 30.5 million, and approximately 2,395 grams of MDMA (Ecstasy) pills. The largest single portion of MDMA, valued at Rs. 33.03 million, was found in a single parcel from Belgium. Additionally, 33 grams of Mandy (powdered MDMA) were recovered from a parcel originating in the Netherlands.

Customs officials had been monitoring the suspicious mail for several months. After the designated recipients failed to claim the packages within the permitted timeframe, officers inspected the contents alongside the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB). The seized contraband has been handed over to the PNB for further investigation and legal action.
