Sri Lanka declares emergency response to El Niño water crisis

Sri Lanka has activated emergency response measures to combat a severe water crisis driven by the El Niño weather pattern. The drought has caused water levels in hundreds of small tanks to drop to approximately 10%, threatening drinking supplies, agriculture, and wildlife.

The government has allocated Rs. 4.8 billion ($14 million) to manage water distribution. Authorities are currently delivering water via trucks to nearly 72,000 people across seven districts, providing each family with roughly 75 litres every two to three days.

Beyond human needs, the crisis is impacting coconut and vegetable crops, as well as wildlife habitats. In Yala National Park, solar power is being utilized to pump water to support the local animal populations. While year-end monsoons are expected to bring relief, officials warn that drought conditions could return early next year.
