Sri Lanka economic recovery shows progress amid structural risks

Sri Lanka is experiencing signs of economic stabilization, marked by a 4.2% growth rate and a sovereign credit rating upgrade from Fitch Ratings from CCC+ to B− with a stable outlook. This upgrade reflects improvements in fiscal consolidation, rising government revenue, and a declining debt-to-GDP ratio. Projections suggest official foreign exchange reserves could reach approximately US$7.7 billion by the end of 2026.

Despite these indicators, significant vulnerabilities persist. The recovery faces pressures from persistent inflation, mounting public debt, and the need to manage foreign currency obligations. While the country operates under an International Monetary Fund extended fund facility programme, analysts warn that headline growth figures may mask deeper challenges, such as the need for sustained structural reforms, the management of import pressures, and the necessity of ensuring growth improves living standards for the population.
