Sri Lanka energy sector sees solar policy shifts and new battery storage
Sri Lanka is experiencing contrasting developments in its renewable energy sector. On one hand, the government has implemented drastic changes to the net metering framework, effectively halting the momentum of a successful rooftop solar program. This policy reversal has created uncertainty for investors and households that previously used the scheme to export excess electricity to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
On the other hand, utility-scale energy storage is expanding. WKV Hydro Technics (Pvt) Ltd has commissioned a 10 MW/40 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Galle using Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 technology. This project aims to enhance grid flexibility and support Sri Lanka’s long-term goal of generating 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
