Sri Lanka suffers nationwide power outage due to grid failure

Sri Lanka experienced a nationwide electricity blackout on Saturday, October 17, 2026, after a sudden failure in the national power grid. The outage, which lasted approximately seven hours, disrupted water supplies, internet services, and mobile connectivity across the island.

Authorities suspect the grid imbalance was caused by excessive solar power generation. Sri Lanka has an installed solar capacity exceeding 3,000 megawatts, while daytime electricity demand typically ranges between 2,000 and 2,500 megawatts. Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka also noted that a failure at a hydropower station in the central hill country detected the previous day may have contributed to the breakdown.

To assist in the phased restoration of the power supply, the Minister requested that owners of rooftop solar systems temporarily disconnect them from the grid. While some areas saw power return by late afternoon, most of the country remained without electricity until approximately 7 pm. This incident follows a similar nationwide grid failure in February 2025, highlighting ongoing challenges in managing the country's growing renewable energy integration and policy frameworks.
