Sri Lanka faces rising inflation and land valuation growth
Sri Lanka is facing mixed economic indicators as inflation rose to 7.2% in July, increasing cost-of-living pressures for households. This uptick occurs as the nation continues a fragile recovery following its 2022 financial crisis and works under an International Monetary Fund recovery programme.
In the Colombo District, the Land Valuation Index (LVI) grew by 5.9% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. All three sub-indices showed increases: residential land prices rose by 6.7%, commercial land by 5.7%, and industrial land by 5.2%. On a half-yearly basis, the overall index grew by 3.7% compared to the second half of 2025.
Economists note that while the country has made progress in debt restructuring and stabilizing foreign exchange reserves, rising inflation remains a challenge for the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in its efforts to maintain macroeconomic stability.
