Sri Lanka faces worsening dry spell under El Niño as rain returns to the southwest

Meteorological authorities in Sri Lanka have warned of an intensifying dry spell across the island linked to an El Niño weather pattern. Reservoir levels in the North Central and Eastern provinces have fallen, prompting concerns for paddy cultivation, drinking‑water supplies and rural livelihoods.

A short‑range forecast predicts a modest increase in showers over the southwestern districts, including Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara‑Eliya, with strong winds of 40‑50 km/h expected across western slopes and coastal areas. Marine warnings note rough seas and higher wave heights along the south‑central coast.

Officials have urged water‑management agencies to monitor tank levels and implement drought‑preparedness measures while the public is advised to conserve water and stay updated on weather advisories.
