Sri Lanka floods and mudslides kill seven, force school closures

Heavy monsoon rains over the past two days caused severe flooding and mudslides in Sri Lanka's central mountainous tea‑growing region. At least seven people have been confirmed dead – five buried in mudslides that swept over two houses and two killed by floodwaters – and three injured. More than 291 houses were damaged and roughly 3,500 residents evacuated.

The disaster prompted authorities to close schools in the affected districts and to deploy navy and army units for rescue and relief. Emergency shelters were opened for displaced families and relief supplies distributed. The event follows the country's ongoing vulnerability to monsoon‑related landslides and comes as Sri Lanka continues rebuilding from Cyclone Ditwa.
