Sri Lanka government approval drops to 50% as economic confidence wanes
The Sri Lankan government’s approval rating fell to 50 percent in July 2026, according to the ‘Mood of the Nation’ poll conducted by Verité Research in partnership with Vanguard Survey (Pvt) Ltd. This represents a 15-percentage-point decline from the 65 percent approval rating recorded in February 2026.
Public sentiment regarding the national economy has weakened significantly. The Economic Confidence Index has dropped into negative territory, reaching minus 8, after previously remaining positive since February 2025. Only 42 percent of the 2,013 adults surveyed believe the economy is ‘getting better,’ a sharp decrease from 64 percent in February. Conversely, 40 percent of respondents stated the economy is ‘getting worse,’ and 56 percent described current economic conditions as ‘poor.’
Disapproval of the government also rose to 31 percent, up from approximately 15 percent in previous polling periods.
