Sri Lanka implements digital motor vehicle insurance cards

Sri Lanka has transitioned to digital motor vehicle insurance cards, replacing traditional physical certificates. Following decisions by the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka and other stakeholders, general insurance companies began issuing digital cards via mobile applications on May 1, 2026. Additionally, the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board introduced digital cards on July 20, 2026.

The Sri Lanka Police have confirmed that digital insurance cards are recognized as legitimate proof of coverage and carry equal legal standing to physical copies during traffic inspections. Motorists are no longer required to carry paper documentation and may present digital versions via smartphones.

To verify policy validity, the National Insurance Verification System and the Agri Insurance Policy Verification System have been established. General insurance policies can be checked using the *1338# USSD code or by sending an SMS to 1338. For Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board policies, motorists can use the *1918# code or SMS to 1918. Verification is also available via QR codes, specific URLs, and toll-free hotlines.
