Sri Lanka inflation rises to 8.1% in August
Sri Lanka's headline inflation rose to 8.1% in August, marking a significant upward trend from 2.2% in March. This acceleration has raised concerns regarding the country's ongoing economic recovery and the cost of living for households, particularly lower and middle-income earners.
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) maintains a formal quarterly average inflation target of 5%. While a formal breach requires inflation to deviate by more than two percentage points from this target for two consecutive quarters, the recent trajectory—climbing from 5.4% in April to 8.1% in August—indicates rapid acceleration.
Analysts are monitoring whether this spike is temporary or a persistent trend driven by food and energy prices, currency fluctuations, and supply chain pressures. The CBSL's previous policy decisions, including a 100-basis-point increase to the Overnight Policy Rate in May, are under scrutiny as the bank seeks to balance domestic demand and credit expansion against inflationary pressures.
