Sri Lanka intensifies crackdown on rising cybercrime and digital fraud

Sri Lanka is facing an increasing threat from sophisticated cybercrime and digital financial fraud, prompting a high-level review by the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs. Parliamentary disclosures have confirmed that legal action is being taken against foreign nationals residing in Sri Lanka who are allegedly involved in cybercrime, with deportation arrangements being coordinated through their respective embassies.

Law enforcement officials reported that police are currently blocking websites linked to illegal gambling and other unlawful activities. To combat the evolving landscape of digital offenses—which include identity theft, phishing, and social media impersonation—the police are recruiting software engineers and lawyers to strengthen investigative capabilities. Authorities are also seeking specialized field and overseas training for officers and are considering the implementation of a centralized, real-time technological system for investigations.

Challenges remain regarding the international sharing of information, particularly when cryptocurrency is used to move funds across jurisdictions. The committee's scrutiny highlights the need for improved inter-agency cooperation, updated legislative frameworks, and enhanced public awareness to protect citizens and businesses from rising digital threats.
