Sri Lanka issues amber advisory for rough seas and strong winds
Meteorological authorities in Sri Lanka have issued an amber advisory due to hazardous maritime conditions, including strong winds and rough seas. The warning urges mariners, naval communities, and fishing populations to exercise heightened caution and take necessary precautions.
Forecasts indicate southwesterly winds of 30-40 kph, potentially increasing to 50-60 kph in waters ranging from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar, Mullaitivu to Trincomalee, and Hambantota to Pottuvil. Wave heights are expected to reach between 2 and 2.5 meters in several coastal areas, including waters from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Matara.
On land, showers and thundershowers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya districts. The public has been advised to remain alert to localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
