Sri Lanka issues amber lightning warning for Eastern and Uva provinces

Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology has issued an amber-level lightning advisory for the Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as two additional districts. The warning highlights a significant risk of dangerous lightning activity, prompting authorities to urge residents and travelers to take immediate protective measures.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected across various regions, with rainfall potentially exceeding 75 millimeters in some areas. Thunderstorms are forecast to develop after 2 p.m. in the Uva, Central, and Eastern provinces, along with the Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts. Spells of showers are also anticipated in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and the Galle and Matara districts.

Authorities advise the public to avoid open fields, hilltops, isolated trees, metal structures, and water bodies during electrical activity. Residents are encouraged to remain indoors and stay updated on meteorological developments. Additionally, southwesterly winds are expected to reach speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour, with gusts potentially increasing to 60 kph in certain maritime areas.
