Sri Lanka issues amber rain alert for ten districts
Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology has issued an amber advisory for heavy rainfall, affecting ten districts across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North Western provinces. The warning, effective from 7 a.m. on September 21 until 7 a.m. on September 22, signals potential danger to lives and property due to severe rain conditions.
Heavy rainfall of approximately 100 mm is expected in some locations. Recent recordings show Maliboda in the Kegalle district received 104 mm, while other areas like Kalupahana, Maskeliya, Polpithigama, and Dammulla also reported high levels. The weather patterns are driven by wind flow toward a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, though the system is not expected to directly impact the country.
Authorities have urged residents, particularly those in low-lying or landslide-prone areas, to take precautionary measures, remain vigilant, and avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall.
