Sri Lanka issues highest-level landslide warnings for three districts

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued Level 3 Red landslide warnings, the highest alert level, for several areas in Sri Lanka's Kandy, Kegalle, and Nuwara Eliya districts. The warning is in effect from the afternoon of September 20 until the afternoon of September 21 due to increased risks of slope failure caused by heavy rainfall.

Specific areas under the Red alert include the Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat Division in Kandy; Dehiowita, Aranayaka, Deraniyagala, Mawanella, and Yatiyantota in Kegalle; and Kotmale West, Kotmale East, Ambagamuwa, and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya.

Additionally, a Level 2 Amber warning remains in place for several other districts, including Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Matara, and Ratnapura. Authorities have urged residents in high-risk zones to monitor for signs of ground instability, such as tilting trees or cracking soil, and to be prepared for potential evacuations.
