Sri Lanka issues weather warning for northern districts
The Department of Meteorology warned that northern, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces, as well as the districts of Kandy, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, may experience intermittent rain and thunderstorms. Strong gusts of 40‑50 km/h are expected in the central highlands and coastal areas, with peak winds reaching 60 km/h near Hambantota and Pottuvil. Sea conditions will become choppy, with wave heights of 2‑2.5 m and occasional rough seas. Residents are urged to take precautionary measures against possible lightning, strong winds and flooding.
The advisory noted that wind will generally blow from the southwest at 30‑40 km/h, increasing to 50‑60 km/h in the mentioned coastal zones. The public is advised to stay informed and avoid unnecessary travel if conditions worsen.
