Sri Lanka launches digital support systems for fisheries and plantations

Sri Lanka has launched new Decision Support Systems (DSS) for its fisheries and plantation sectors as part of the Inclusive Digital Agriculture Transformation Program. These digital public assets are designed to replace fragmented reporting with integrated, data-driven governance to improve policy, planning, and resource management.

The fisheries platform consolidates data from six government institutions, including the National Aquaculture Development Authority and the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation. It utilizes dashboards, visual analytics, and monitoring tools to assist with decisions regarding aquaculture, market intelligence, and sustainability. Dr. B. K. Kolita Kamal Jinadasa, Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, noted that the system aims to enhance institutional efficiency and transparency.

Parallel to these digital tools, the government is pursuing a broader modernization of the agricultural landscape. Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunnethi stated that introducing contemporary innovations is essential for strengthening food security and boosting crop yields. This technological shift is viewed as a critical component of the nation's economic recovery efforts.
