Sri Lanka launches first Chinese Yuan clearing bank in Colombo

Sri Lanka has officially launched its first Chinese Renminbi (RMB) clearing bank in Colombo to facilitate cross-border financial transactions and strengthen economic cooperation with China. Authorized by the People’s Bank of China, the Colombo branch of the Bank of China will serve as the official RMB clearing bank.

The new facility establishes a direct connection between Sri Lanka’s banking network and China’s financial system, allowing for direct cross-border RMB clearing and domestic interbank transactions. This mechanism enables businesses to settle eligible transactions directly in Yuan, eliminating the need to first convert Sri Lankan Rupees into US Dollars before converting to Yuan.

This shift is expected to reduce currency conversion costs, mitigate exchange rate risks, and accelerate transaction processing times for importers and exporters. The initiative aims to improve cash-flow management and reduce dependence on intermediary banks, thereby streamlining international payments between the two nations.
