Sri Lanka launches first project in 300MW solar programme
Sri Lanka has initiated its 300-megawatt solar power programme, aimed at increasing the nation's renewable energy capacity and reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels. The first phase, a 3-megawatt ground-mounted solar project in Veyangoda, was inaugurated by Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka.
The Veyangoda facility utilizes 640-watt bifacial solar panels, which are expected to generate approximately 6.35 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This project is estimated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4,340 tonnes per year.
The broader 300MW initiative is part of a national strategy to meet 70% of energy requirements from renewable sources by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. To support this transition, the government is upgrading the national electricity grid to accommodate increased renewable energy input and is encouraging private-sector participation in upcoming projects.
