Sri Lanka mass grave discovery unearths 582 skeletons

Excavations at a mass grave site in Chemmani, near Jaffna, have uncovered 582 skeletons, including those of infants and children. The remains are believed to be civilians who disappeared during Sri Lanka’s civil war between government forces and the LTTE. Alongside the skeletal remains, investigators recovered personal items such as toys, milk bottles, school bags, and shoes. One skeleton was found with hands bound against the chest.

The site has been linked to allegations of military killings of Tamil civilians since 1998. This latest discovery follows a previous excavation last year that unearthed 240 remains. The current work was prompted by construction workers finding skeletal remains near a Hindu cremation ground.

In a separate development regarding the civil war's aftermath, the Sri Lankan government has introduced mandatory intelligence checks for ethnic Tamil refugees returning from India. These checks, conducted by the State Intelligence Service (SIS), replace previous police verification processes. Refugee advocacy groups have expressed concern over the involvement of the SIS, citing fears of unfair treatment and potential detention of returnees based on accusations of treason or other serious offenses.
