Sri Lanka Meteorology Issues Heavy Rainfall and Wind Advisory for Central Highlands
Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory for early August 2026, warning of heavy rainfall across several provinces. Forecasts call for downpours exceeding 100 mm in the hill country districts of Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, with about 50 mm expected in parts of Sabaragamuwa, Kalutara, Galle and Matara. Strong winds of 40‑60 km/h are also forecast, especially over the North‑central, Southern and North‑western provinces, and sea conditions are expected to be rough with wave heights of 2.5‑3 m along the coast from Puttalam to Pottuvil.
Residents, commuters, farmers and outdoor workers in the affected areas are urged to take precautions, monitor updates and avoid hazardous road and sea conditions. The naval and fishing communities are specifically advised to remain vigilant in the forecast‑affected sea zones.
