Sri Lanka mourns iconic elephants amid calls for wildlife protection
The deaths of iconic elephants Nadungamuwa Raja and Kavantissa have triggered widespread public grief and political attention in Sri Lanka. The loss of these celebrated tuskers has reignited urgent debates regarding the welfare, custody, and conservation of the island's elephant population.
In the case of Kavantissa, his death following a gunshot injury led to criticism of wildlife authorities and calls for an independent investigation into veterinary care. The incident has highlighted the severe human-elephant conflict in the region; Sri Lanka recorded 455 wild elephant deaths in 2025, including 79 caused by gunshot injuries.
Conservationists and officials are now facing pressure to fast-track protective measures to address habitat loss, shrinking forest cover, and the conditions of captive elephants used in cultural and religious processions. The deaths have underscored the need for more robust policies to manage the interaction between expanding agricultural lands and wild herds.
