Sri Lanka orders probe into declining fish stocks and coastal security

Sri Lanka is implementing measures to address declining fish stocks and enhance the protection of its coastal ecosystems. The government has directed the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) to conduct a scientific investigation into the steady drop in fish harvests. This decline threatens the livelihoods of coastal communities, national food security, and the broader seafood supply chain.

Potential causes under investigation include overfishing, environmental degradation, climate change, illegal fishing activities, and pollution. To complement these research efforts, the Ministry of Environment is developing a comprehensive action plan to strengthen security and environmental protection at fishery harbours.

A joint committee, including representatives from the Ministries of Defence, Environment, Fisheries, and Tourism, is working to identify security gaps and improve waste management, oil spill preparedness, and fire prevention. These efforts aim to coordinate national strategies for sustainable marine and coastal conservation.
