Sri Lanka Police launch mobile app with SOS emergency feature

The Sri Lanka Police has launched a new mobile application designed to modernize emergency response through a dedicated SOS feature. By pressing and holding the SOS button, users can transmit their real-time location to the nearest relevant police officers, providing a faster alternative to traditional telephone calls during critical situations such as assaults or abductions.

Registration for the app is available via National Identity Card, with provisions for children to use parental identification and foreign nationals to use passports. Beyond the SOS function, the application allows users to submit information directly to specialized units handling cyber fraud, narcotics, traffic offenses, and protection for women and children. It also includes a chatbot for queries and access to existing police services.

The app was developed through a collaboration between the Sri Lanka Police Information Technology Division, the Police Media Division, and a private technology partner. Authorities have cautioned against misuse of the emergency features, noting that legal action has already been taken against 91 individuals for misusing the 119 emergency hotline in 2025.
