Sri Lanka Police launch nationwide crackdown on illegal parking

Sri Lanka Police have issued a nationwide directive to all police stations to enforce strict legal action against motorists engaging in illegal parking. The crackdown aims to reduce road congestion and improve safety in urban and suburban areas. Authorities have stated that officers are now empowered to pursue legal proceedings and fines rather than merely issuing warnings.

Specific emphasis has been placed on preventing the obstruction of bus stops. Police noted that parked vehicles often force buses to stop in the middle of roadways, creating hazards for passengers. This is particularly critical for the safety of persons with disabilities using new wheelchair-accessible services.

According to government regulations, parking is prohibited within 30 metres of a bus stop and 15 metres of its exit. For stops with designated bus bays, the prohibited zones are 15 metres and 10 metres, respectively. Vehicles left in hazardous positions may be subject to towing.
