Sri Lanka Police launch WhatsApp video helpline for hearing-impaired

Sri Lanka Police have launched a new WhatsApp-based video call service to assist the hearing-impaired community in accessing emergency services. The initiative, officially launched by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, was part of programs marking the 160th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Police.

The service is designed to allow deaf and hearing-impaired individuals to lodge complaints and seek assistance through the 119 Police Emergency Call Unit without the barriers of traditional voice calls. To use the service, individuals can contact the number 011 280 9980 via WhatsApp. After an initial audio call, users will receive a link to join a video meeting where they can communicate their needs visually.

This move aims to modernize communication infrastructure and ensure more inclusive policing by protecting the rights and safety of citizens with physical disabilities.
