Sri Lanka police prohibit redirecting motorists over GovPay excuses

Sri Lanka's Traffic Police Deputy Inspector General, W. P. J. Senadeera, has issued a directive prohibiting officers from redirecting motorists to other locations under the pretext that GovPay payment facilities are unavailable. The directive follows the completion of a nationwide rollout, ensuring all police stations are equipped to process traffic fine payments through the digital platform.

Officers conducting traffic duties have been provided with mobile devices to facilitate these payments on-site, meaning motorists should be able to settle fines at the location of the offense rather than being forced to visit a station. Senadeera warned that claiming GovPay is unavailable will be treated as a serious offense by the involved officers.

The GovPay system is part of a government digitalization policy aimed at increasing transparency and reducing cash handling. Additionally, authorities indicated that a demerit point system for traffic offenses is expected to be introduced in the future.
